At last, a domestic release of a film by one of Czech cinema's greatest filmmakers, Karel Zeman (who would be celebrating his 100th birthday this year), which not only does the film justice, but, the feature being subtitled in English, makes it accessible to Karel Zeman fans all over the world.
Note this is already the 5th Karel Zeman film released on DVD in Czech Republic, BUT, the first two releases, by CČV / Bonton, were of the "blink-and-you-miss-it" kind ("The Stolen Airship" going OOP shortly after its release, due to rights issues, and "On the Comet" not being officially (a few copies "slipped through" because of a human error) released at all for the same reason; and while for the next two releases, "Krabat" and "The Tale of John and Marie" (by Země pohádek), the rights seem to have been secured properly, they're barebones, and the PQ is not that good either (however, the former of the two is the only release of "Krabat" in existence featuring the Czech soundtrack). None of these four releases is, of course, English-friendly.
Anyway, this 2-discer here is a revelation; the picture is very nice - very clean, the DD 2.0 mono track sounds... adequate (a bit tinny in places, but I expect that's only understandable for a film 46 years old), there's a wealth of extras (Czech only though)... What more can this Karel Zeman fan wish for? I'll tell you what! Bring on "The Fabulous Baron Munchausen" - the true gem of Karel Zeman's filmography, at least in this reviewer's humble opinion. (c:

Absolutely no improvement here - weak transfer, Polish voice-over only... Interestingly enough... On second thought - forget it, it's not that interesting anyway...
